FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Why is communication important during my massage?

Communication is key to ensuring you have the best possible massage experience. Sharing your preferences, such as areas of focus, pressure levels, or any specific concerns, helps your therapist tailor the session to meet your needs. Everyone’s body is unique, and open communication allows us to provide a massage that feels comfortable, effective, and relaxing for you. Remember, your feedback is always welcome during the session. Whether you'd like adjustments or have questions, don’t hesitate to speak up—your comfort is our top priority!

What should I expect during my massage therapy visit?

Upon arrival, your therapist will ask you to sign a consent form and request that you fill out a health history form or update it. The therapist will ask you general questions to determine which areas you would like worked on and any areas to avoid. It’s important to share all health concerns and medications so that the therapist can tailor the session to your needs and ensure your safety. If you have any allergies, please inform the therapist, so they can use an appropriate oil or lotion. Most massages at Kaley Michelle Massage are performed using grapeseed oil.

Do I have to be completely undressed?

You should undress to the level that makes you feel most comfortable. For a full-body massage, many clients choose to undress completely, leaving on their underwear. However, your therapist will work around any clothing you prefer to keep on, ensuring your comfort throughout the session. If undressing makes you feel too nervous to relax, it’s perfectly fine to remain clothed in the areas you prefer. Your therapist will always provide you with privacy to undress and get settled on the massage table, where sheets and towels are used to ensure proper coverage and maintain your comfort. While you can choose what feels best for you, fully undressing allows your therapist to provide the most effective and comprehensive massage experience.

Do I have to cover myself with a sheet or towel?

Yes, this is known as draping. Most therapists will insist on draping for your comfort and privacy. Once undressed, the therapist will only uncover the part of your body being worked on, and the genitals and breasts will never be uncovered. If the therapist needs to work on your abdomen, a second towel will be used to cover the chest, allowing the main sheet to be moved to expose the abdomen.

What do I have to do during the massage treatment?

Make yourself as comfortable as possible. If your therapist needs you to adjust your position, they will either move you or ask for your cooperation. Otherwise, feel free to adjust your position at any time to remain comfortable. Many clients prefer to close their eyes and relax completely during a session, but if you prefer to talk, that’s perfectly fine. It’s your massage, and the best way to relax is the way that feels natural to you. Feel free to ask questions, but keep in mind that you’ll benefit most by relaxing and allowing your body to absorb the treatment.

Will the massage hurt?

Massage should never be extremely painful. However, it’s important to distinguish between the "feels good" discomfort of deep pressure and actual pain. Even a deep tissue massage should stay within the "feels good" range. Pain can indicate muscle injury or inflammation, and in such cases, the pressure should be adjusted. Remember, pain can also cause the body to tense up, negating the relaxing effects of the massage. A good massage will work with your body’s natural response to the pressure, not against it.

How often should I get a massage?

The frequency of your sessions depends on your goals. If you’re seeking occasional relaxation, every 3–6 weeks may be sufficient. For addressing specific conditions, more frequent sessions may be necessary, which can later taper to a maintenance schedule. The therapist will discuss the optimal frequency for you after your initial session, taking into account your body’s response to the treatment. But there is no pressure to keep up with massage treatments.

Can I talk during my session?

Certainly! Feel free to talk if you prefer. However, the primary goal of your session is relaxation. Many therapists encourage quietness during the massage to help you unwind, but if talking helps you feel more relaxed, that’s completely fine. If you need to make any adjustments to the temperature, pressure, or other aspects of the session, please don’t hesitate to speak up. It’s important to communicate any discomfort so the therapist can ensure the experience is as comfortable as possible.

Do I have to listen to whale sounds or flutes during my massage?

Not at all! While many therapists play calming, slower-paced music, you are welcome to choose a different type of music or no music at all. If you have a preference, simply let your therapist know before the session begins. The therapist can accommodate your preferences to create a relaxing environment that suits you. You’re welcome to play your favourite music from your own device to enhance your relaxation!

How will I feel after my massage treatment?

Most clients feel deeply relaxed after a massage. Many experience a significant reduction in long-term aches and pains, while others report increased energy, heightened awareness, and enhanced productivity that can last for days. If you had a deep massage, you might feel slightly sore the next day, similar to after a workout. A hot shower or a soak in the tub can help ease any lingering soreness. Remember to hydrate after your session by drinking an extra glass or two of water to keep your body’s tissues healthy and nourished.

When should I not get a massage?

If you are unwell, have a fever, cold/flu, cough, or a contagious skin infection, it’s best to reschedule your appointment. There are also certain conditions where the therapist may need to adjust their techniques or avoid specific areas (e.g., arthritis, osteoporosis, cuts, burns, or bruises). For certain health conditions, including some heart conditions or epilepsy, a doctor’s note may be required before proceeding with the massage. It’s important to take precautions and ensure that the massage is safe for you.

What if I get an erection during my massage?

Occasionally, this may happen during a non-sexual therapeutic massage. This is a natural physiological response triggered by the parasympathetic nervous system. Please rest assured that this is entirely normal and does not affect the professionalism of the therapist. If you are concerned, wearing more supportive underwear or requesting a back massage only where you are face down can help prevent this situation.

Please note, if the therapist believes the session has taken a sexual turn, they will stop the massage and address the situation professionally. All sessions are strictly professional, and any inappropriate behaviour will result in the termination of the session and further treatments.
